Together with the gradual lifting of quarantine restrictions, the AITF recently allowed pillion riding that starting last Friday, July 10, 2020, provided that strict health protocols are followed. Part of the said protocol was the use of a protective barrier to be installed the rider and passenger. The approved design included handles on the sides to prevent contact, and still required the use of facemasks and helmets.
Also approved was the backpack-type shield design submitted by Angkas, the two-wheel-ride-hailing app. The final approved version was the result of many weeks of testing and redesigning to find the best form.
Below is the statement of Angkas’ Chief Transport Advocate George Royeca:
Maraming, maraming, maraming salamat po Sec. Lorenzana, Sec. Año, Sec. Galvez, Sec. Dizon, the IATF, and the NTF for the swift action and decisiveness on public transport safety.
The responsiveness that you have shown especially during this pandemic is a great service to the Filipino people.
This is the culmination of many long weeks of testing and improving dozens of prototypes. Published here are images of the approved design, as well as its key features and highlights, to reassure the public of the kind of thinking that went into the shield’s development.
We look forward to collaborating closely with the IATF on this and furthering the safety of all Filipinos during this pandemic.
Maraming salamat po!

When Angkas is allowed to operate again, would you feel safer riding with the shield?
